Are You “All or Nothing” With Your Fitness?

Have you ever had that time when you know you should have exercised today, but you found every reason not to?  We tend to find things to rationalize why we “don’t have time” or “I’ll just start on Monday”.

I’ve done it! Just this past week I almost fell into that trap.  I had a busy day ahead of me and not much time in between commitments.  I caught myself taking that path of least resistance. I instantly went right to  telling myself that I didn’t have time. I could almost feel the cortisol pumping through my body with the stress/guilt I felt about bailing on the workout I planned to do.  But… when I stopped myself and broke down my day hour by hour, using my rational brain, I realized I did in fact have time for a quick 20 minute workout with a kettlebell and a resistance band.  It wasn’t the workout I planned to get in, but it was something.

It’s that “all or nothing” mentality.

Have you ever felt like you failed because you only got one workout this week?  Maybe you haven’t worked out in a few weeks? Maybe you are like me and had a life changing event happen, which led to not really working out for about 9 months!!!!

Maybe your goal is to run a 5k, but you feel like “when I get in a little bit better shape I’ll try to train for that”.  Maybe you want to be able to deadlift your bodyweight, or do perfect kettlebell swings with 30lbs, but you feel like “I just need to be a little stronger , then I’ll give that a try”.

This mindset, that we all have, keeps us in neutral or reverse gear, when we need to be peddle to the metal driving our way to that fit lifestyle we want!!  Mindset is a powerful thing that gets overlooked so often.   Be mindful, and try to bring those destructive subconscious thoughts to the front to be conscious of it.  Then, you can shift into the right gear to get you where you want to go!

It’s never too late to get started.  Someone smart once said, “there is no better time than the present”.

It’s ok to only do a quick short workout (rather than nothing).  It’s ok start out with a brisk walk for your 5k training, and not even run!  Just commit to your goal and get started somewhere!

It’s ok if you can’t get 4-5 workouts in a week, just pick ONE day this week.  Get that first workout in, and then schedule the next one for next week.  Then build up to 2 workouts a week, then even 3 a week! It might take some time, but just start somewhere!

IMPORTANT! Once you do start, and you get that first walk in the books, or you got that workout in today, CELEBRATE THAT WIN!  You did  it! Take time to celebrate every little, tiny win.  It’s those seemingly small wins, like a tiny snowflake, that end up building up to a giant snowball!

Keep working on that “mindset muscle”.  When we can embrace that “growth mindset” rather than a “fixed mindset”, we open up new opportunities for us to get stronger physically, mentally and emotionally.  That kind of growth is powerful to making your life better, and the lives of your family as well.

So go get it! Think about your goal this week, and go write it down somewhere.  What is the ONE THING you can do this week to get just one step closer?

If you’re already a member at Resolve Studio, hopefully we inspired you today to go book one more class than you planned on.  Maybe you’ve missed a few weeks, so get into Mindbody and book that next class!

We’ll see you soon!
